Hornby Train Set Deals for Christmas
Having done a bit of research recently regarding entry level Hornby train sets, I thought I would put together a post detailing where there are bargains to be had on the high street.
There seems to be a real string of very similar entry levels train sets from Hornby at the moment, many are being released as exclusives for various mail order and high street stores and thanks to Woolworths for slashing the price of their Midland Flyer Train Set, it’s forced the other retailers to bring the sets in-line with Woolies.
You can currently pick up a new train set, complete with a little 0-4-0 steam locomotive, passenger carriage, lowmac and two other wagons for the timely sum of £39.99. You also get an oval of track with a siding, the power controller, loads of trackside accessories and a trakmat. The set also comes with a bunch of trackside bits and bobs such as buffers and signals etc.
So what else is out there at a similar price? Argos have just taken delivery of a new train set for Christmas. Its called the Coastal Freight Train Set, and retails for, wait for it, yes £39.99. I was originally priced at £79.99 however, Argos have bought it in line with Woolworths.
Coastal Freight Train Set R1111
The contents of the Coastal Freight Train Set is almost identical to the the Midland Flyer set, however you get a slightly different steam locomotive in the form of a Southern Steam 0-4-0.
A third set which, is almost identical to the Midland Flyer and Coastal Freight sets is the slightly more pricey Western Spirit Train Set. This set was not made as an exclusive to any one but retails at around the £49 mark.

Another release for Hornby is the Easterner Train Set. Again it includes the same basic parts as the other sets on this page and would make a great beginners train set.
Eastern Train Set R1120
Yet another train set made for entry level moddlers and model railway beginners is the Industrial Train Set. As all the previous sets, pack contains a small steam locomotive and four wagons, along with lots of trackside accessories and a trackmat.
